Call on Bubba Dummy II.
For more than 15 years, Brett Picotte (aka Dr. Bubbastein) has been hand-building the Bubba Dummy in Willard, Missouri. Bubba is considered by many to be the best grappling dummy on the market today. Yeah, we know that's a serious claim, but Caique Jiu-Jitsu, Burton Richardson, Richard Bustillo and Nick "Machine" May are just some of those who agree. And this is the dummy that the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy sold exclusively for eight years.
"This is the best dummy I've ever practiced with!" says Prof. Caique, the renowned BJJ instructor. "Its versatility to practice many different positions makes the difference."
The Bubba Dummy was designed to be the ultimate, non-human training partner. It is built for practicing all of the techniques of jiu-jitsu and other types of grappling arts. Bubba comes complete and ready to take your full-power strikes, locks, chokes, throws and takedowns, and it is amazing how realistic a training partner he is. In fact, he's so realistic we recommend that you wear an athletic cup when training with Bubba!
Just how realistic is he? Bubba's joints are so realistic that you'd expect him to tap out when you use full force in a jointlock. The knees and elbows, for example, bend naturally but won't bend backward. That means you can really crank those jointlocks and increase your leverage and strength.
The shoulders, hips, ankles and wrists are all very realistic, too. He even has fingers you can attack or interlock. If you interlock Bubba's fingers, it will be more difficult to get close to strike him. It also sets him up for armlocks. (By tying them together for a few hours, when released, his fingers will have a tendency to stay interlocked longer.)
You can also try bending his arms first and tying his wrists together for practicing headlock escapes, or if you tie a loose knot or a half knot, his wrists will eventually separate for an armlock finish. Bubba can even be used for throws and takedowns, as he can balance with some assistance.
HE'S NO REGULAR DUMMY
Once you get your hands on him, don't be fooled by the seemingly common materials used to build the Bubba Dummy (hose, rope, strapping, wood, burlap and several types of tape). Bubba is anything but common. The ingenious way in which the material is used to recreate the form and function of the human body is absolutely amazing. In fact, the U.S. Patent Office found it to be unique enough to issue a patent. (U.S. Patent #6,139,328).
To be sure, there are many articles on how to build a dummy on your own, and no doubt Bubba is created from common materials. However, it is the ingenious way these materials come together that makes Bubba what he is. And unquestionably, it is not something the average person can put together at home. Just ask one of the guys in the trenches.
"I wish it was that easy to build one of these," says one builder at I&I, noting that it takes more than 20 hours to build one Bubba II Dummy. "Even after learning how to build it, we still have to constantly refer to written instructions and a video that details every step."
DR. BUBBASTEIN
The steps that brought Bubba together were taken in 2005. That is when I&I Sports-makers of the Fighting Man Dummy, Grappling Man Dummy and Rescue Man Dummy-approached Dr. Bubbastein and developed a relationship that would later make them the only company to be licensed to build the Bubba Dummy. Our buddy Bubba first made his venture into the general public in September of 2006. Meanwhile, Dr. Bubbastein still builds custom-designed Bubbas.
"Our association with I&I Sports has proved to be something that will benefit the grappling world," says Dr. Bubbastein. "Before they came along, I had more than six months back ordered! Practitioners around the country were becoming very disgusted with our inability to deliver. With I&I's help, we should be able to minimize the wait for Bubba."
And there's no reason for you to wait any longer. If you want a partner who is there for you any time of the day, Bubba Dummy is your dude. And he's one bad dude.

From Those Who Know "Bubba is awesome and absolutely fantastic. I must say I'm so impressed. He is so realistic in terms of weight, feel and posture. The best part about Bubba is the tension in his joints. The resistance this gives when applying locks, as well as when I'm pounding him or just practicing controls and hold downs, is fantastic. It's good in the sense that he's not compliant with everything you do. He puts up a fight, which makes it so realistic. He is really beneficial for training and developing skills. Most impressive of all, though, is the way he's put together. He's so well-designed and made!" - David Stevens "The Bubba Dummy is a great addition to anyone's self-defense or grappling training. You can work your strikes and submissions at full speed and power without fear of hurting your partner. Bubba hasn't complained once! You can also get lots of repetitions of techniques to burn the patterns into your muscle memory. Another great advantage of Bubba is that you can hold rear naked chokes, collar chokes, triangles and other chokes for as long as your muscles can last. This is a great way to increase your strength and endurance, specific to grappling. The Bubba Dummy is the very best grappling dummy I have ever seen or used. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve his performance." - Burton Richardson, martial arts instructor | {mosimage} {mosimage} |
