Jeremy Stephens’ Daughter Has Provided Him Added Incentive to Excel
Jeremy Stephens could not hide the evidence, as the birth of “Lil’ Heathen” brought with it black eyes, bloody lips and the kind of notoriety that spreads like wildfire through close-knit communities.
His father frowned upon his involvement in mixed martial arts, which began at age 16 with an amateur fight before 500 people in Des Moines, Iowa.
“I was nervous,” Stephens says. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I felt like I was a fighter. I just wanted to compete.”
His heavy hands made an immediate appearance.
Stephens connected with a combination that rocked his opponent backward and left him exposed for a thunderous takedown. The finish came soon after.
Stephens was a natural.
“I didn’t train at all for that fight, but I felt comfortable in there,” he says. “I’ve always been a fighter.”
Facing the music at home was a different animal.
