If baseball is a game of inches, then MMA could be the “game” of seconds.
In his heavyweight title fight with Dan Henderson on Saturday at the Sears Centre in Chicago, Fedor Emelianenko sent his opponent crashing to the mat in Round 1. Emelianenko tried to put Henderson away with some massive punches, but the 5-foot 11-inch fighter scrambled to Emelianenko’s back, drilled his Russian opponent with an uppercut from behind and then put him away with a few more punches, as referee Herb Dean rushed into to stop the fight.
In a matter of seconds, Emelianenko went from looking like he was on the verge of ending his losing streak to enduring his third straight loss.
Henderson is now 28-8; Emelianenko is now 31-4.
