You probably would have never associated painting and amateur MMA in the same sentence. Until now, that is.

The differentiation between an amateur and a pro is one of the most confusing topics in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Some states mandate silly rules in which amateur fighters must wear headgear and other protective equipment not suitable for a mixed competition. Luckily, in most states, the only difference is that amateurs compete in shorter rounds.

However, all states make it clear that an amateur fighter cannot receive financial compensation for competing in an event … and this is where the water starts to get muddy.
