For the “K-Hero” clothing line owner, Brent Magnussen, no task is too difficult.
He started K-Hero just last year, a clothing line devoted in memoriam of his mother, Karen, who fought cancer for four years until she passed away a year ago. K-Hero gives 15% of their profit to cancer research.
A Las Vegas native, Magnussen, sponsors a few professional fighters and for the first time he sponsored himself as he stepped into the cage at “Tuff ‘N Uff” on April 23 at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
This was Magnussen’s first time competing in a MMA match.
“I am bringing the fight against cancer into the ring,” Magnussen says. “I have always been a huge fan of sports, and I think it’s unique to bring the fight against cancer into the ring, I think that it is an avenue that hasn’t been done yet, and I think it would be great to combine them. Her fight is my fight now.”
Magnussen trained with muay Thai legend, Kevin Ross, at the Tapout Training center in Las Vegas, as well as training at One Kick Nick’s gym with One Kick Nick. Brent’s BJJ training came from Team Carlson Gracie’s World Champion, Ricardo Cavalcanti Magnussen. He made sure that he had the best training for his fight, for more than a win, but for a cause.
“It’s great that 'Tuff ‘N Uff' has been so supportive. It’s one of the best amateur shows in the country,” he says.
The cause for cancer awareness was given justice as Magnussen defeated Ernie Rivera by a submission (kimura) at 1:28 in the first round.
Magnussen has created some online buzz with his video blog of his life leading up to the fight: CancerFighters.org.
"I am launching our non-profit in May, which will be all geared towards helping children with cancer. It’s called 'Karen’s Heros.' I want to raise awareness and find the cure. My mom was devoted to children as she taught for 12 years. I want to give back every penny to those children in honor of her,” he says.
